Western Australia in Brief Western Australia Features
Western Australia or WA is the largest and most isolated state, the Indian Ocean on one side and deserts on the other. Change has been great in this state. The Swan Valley is the traditional home of WA winemaking but this has changed, in 1970 it represented 90% of the states production but by 1996 it was down to only 15%. The Margaret River is the most noted region for fine wine in Western Australia. The Margaret River is between two capes and is totally dependent on the cooling effects of the Indian Ocean. These conditions help to produce some unforgettable wines. Cabernet is extremely concentrated and Merlot is often used to blend in this territory. Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc are also excellent bets. It is easy to recommend Western Australia wines since there are so few. We carry wines from Vasse Felix which is the oldest winery from the Margaret River. The Great Southern is the Southern most wine growing area and has had mixed results but the climate could be right for Pinot Noir.
