3. Cooperatives make a major share of this region's wine, especially in Emilia-Romagna where they make up 70 percent of the wine production.
4. Valentini's Trebbiano d' Abruzzo is in a class by itself. Its maker Valentini is called "Lord of the Vines". 5. Molise, was an appendix of Abruzzi until 1963, and is still regarded as an afterthought.
Adriatic and Appenines in Brief Adriatic and Appenines Featured Winery
This region in the central and east of Italy is comprised of Emillia-Romagna, the Marches, Abruzzi and Molise. This seemingly unconnected area has geographical similarities. It is flanked on the east by the Adriatic and the west by the Apennines from the 45th to the 42nd parallel. Cooperatives make the majority of the four region's wines.

History

Each area is politically distinct in this region. However, like the majority of Italy, these areas share a common heritage from the Greeks, Romans and Etruscans, all of whom have left their trademark vine training methods still in use today. Evidence suggests that people have lived here for over 700,000 years.

Climate and Viticullture

The only vines these areas have in common are Sangiovese, Trebbiano and Malvasia. However, many more varieties are grown and used in abundance. Emilia for example grows Lambrusco, and has a penchant for bubbles of all kinds. It also has claim to fame for Italy's first DOCG white wine, Albana. Verdicchio, from the Marches, has re-emerged as the most promissing native white wine in Italy, and Rosso Conero is emerging as the region's best red. The weather here is agreeable, but the old timers will tell you that it is the daily dose of vino that keeps them living longer than other Italians. The Abruzzo offers Montepulicano d'Abruzzo, and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, and is just now beginning to experiment with new grapes and new styles. Molise has kept their rustic wines to themselves. In the 1980's two areas were given DOC stuatus, however, considering the favorable conditions for growing vines on the hot, rugged, stark hillsides, there is plenty of room for improvement in this region.

Future

Wines from this region are in general not well known or received in the US. As the world continues to shrink, and information is freely accessible, we can expect to see more of the better wines available to us. finding a dependable source for a lively Lambrusco or a refreshing Verdicchio will be commonplace.
