| New South Wales is the home to the Hunter Valley, one of the most recognized appellations. This region is generally hot and humid with afternoon cloud cover. The region is home to Lindemans, the largest vineyard owner in Australia. Semillon is often synonymous with the Hunter Valley and often takes on oak characteristics as it ages even though it never sees oak. Chardonnay also fairs well in this climate. Tyrell’s Long Flat Chardonnay is a fantastic wine for about $7. Hunter Valley Shiraz is very distinctive and generally ages remarkably well. The Mudgee is another area that is becoming very hot. The 2000 foot elevation gives this region a long cool ripening period and the fruit tends to be extremely concentrated. Again look for more vineyards to be developed and keep anmind to trying wine from new regions you will often be rewarded. |
